Restaurant Recommendations in Salvador

Our recommendation is based on a survey of local opinion condusted annually for Brazil´s largest cistulation magazine Veja. Their "Best of" guide recommends restaurnats in various categories e.g. "Best for Meat". Whilst not comprehensive, we believe it is a good starting point for a tourist, but we would love to get your suggestions of restaurants we should add, and comments on those we list.

Best Brazilian

 

Dona Mariquita. Traditional Brazilian dishes such as stews and seafood platters for lunch and buffet breakfasts on Sundays Rua do Meio 178, Rio Vermelho (71) 3334-6947. Daily 12noon - 5pm only (R$40). Site

 

Best Regional

 

Yemanjá. The most requested item on the menu is the grilled shrimp which comes garnished with rice, fish sauce and side dishes. Avenida Octavio Mangabeira, 4661 Jardim Armação. (71) 3461-9010. 11.30am-12.30am, Fri & sat till 1.30am (R$50) Site

 

Best for meat (Charrascaria)

 

Boi Pretto A barbecue restaurant synonymous with Brazil. The meats are brought round to the tables on skewers and you let the server know if you want any or not. Best French

 

Chez Bernard Speciality of the house is Confit of Duck with mash potatoes with a hint of hazelnut. The duck is cooked for 2 days to ensure tenderness and taste. Also on the menu Kobe beef from Japan. Desserts include a bowl of profiteroles filled with cream and covered in chocolate sauce. Best Italian

 

Alfredo di Roma Fettuccini with shrimp and cherry tomato in a white wine sauce or duck breast with parmesan risotto are classic dishes served here. The Italian favourite desert of tiramisu is a must! Best Natural

 

Manjericão This is a predominantly organic and vegetarian buffet restaurant. The dishes served change on a daily basis according to what is available at the market in the morning. Rua Fonte do Boi, 3B, Rio Vermelho. (71) 3335-5641 12noon-3pm only; Closed Sundays. (R$30).

  

Best Oriental

 

Soho Beautifully decorated restaurants, serving realistic Japanese Sushi and now also Thai cuisine. Grilled lobster in herb sauce, or Thai prawn served in coconut shells both exquisitely cooked and served. several locations with different opening hours - see site (R$50)

 

Best Pizza

 

Cheiro de Pizza Three locations and three themed restaurants. Pop culture in one, Bossa Nova in another and Carnival in the third. Great Pizza, great restaurants, great atmospheres. several locations –see site. (R$20)
